High vs. Low Speech

I am really, really tired of reading stupid conspiracy theories on Tumblr about how Amazon is bribing critics for good reviews for Rings of Power or something, so I’m not much on Tumblr Friday night other than answering Fun Fact Friday asks while listening to Tyler Bates.

I had this idea for a Note, and I was between this and talking about tactics in Brisingr (and the Inheritance Cycle as a whole). That’s not off the table entirely, but I feel like I’ve been reading/watching too many things on military history so to help take a break from that I’m going to expand a bit on the idea I mentioned in the last Note on fantasy and tone. Specifically, when it comes to dialogue.

I expect this to come out as a horrible mess, I’m sorry, but probably typing all of my notes into a coherent essay is maybe too much to ask.

On Fantasy Made Mundane

So last weekend I patted myself on the back for finishing The Sandman on Netflix only for Netflix to release a couple of BONUS stories. Which is just awesome but changes my schedule a bit. Also last weekend, Netflix watched an episode and some change of Locke & Key without me?  I turned on the TV to find it paused in the second episode of a season I had seen none of. That was… unnerving.

I had written this down as the topic of last week’s essay, but changed my mind. We’re doing it now!

Random Writing Advice

I think I might pop onto Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla for the seasonal festival and get a cool new sword, but otherwise I am still enjoying Ghost of Tsushima, I’m having a LOT of fun watching The Sandman, and re-watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. And! I’m reading a Redwall book too.

I was thinking about someone’s blog post about The Last Jedi and dialogue, and Whedon’s influence on genre fiction, so I have an idea about how so much fantasy nowadays is trying to make the fantastical… less fantastical? And how weird that is? And disappointing when you think about it.

But that would take an awful lot of time to write and I’m already behind. Because my computer has a complete breakdown every time it wants to do updates, which are ANNOYINGLY common. Also I had this other idea which I thought might be fun. So here we are!

On Dropping Plot Elements

I am considering retiring the Book Diary after this year, as it seems as if it’s a large chunk of my posting on Facebook. I could very easily move it to Tumblr or something? I don’t know, I’m just getting more and more the impression that it is… not really getting anywhere.

But the bright side is that The Sandman is now on Netflix and so I have that to get through.

There is a comment that should be here somewhere about the Everything-Killing Gun from Supernatural, but I couldn’t find a place, so here. That shouldn’t have been forgotten about.

I'm tired of Norse mythology

I have two ideas for Saturday Notes–more actually, but two that I feel developed enough to write about, so I have two Google Docs open with drafts. Whichever one doesn’t get posted this week will show up at some other point–possibly as another week’s Note, or maybe on ImpishIdea (which I haven’t updated in a while).

Anyhow, I finished a lot of books this week, which kind of surprised me. I thought I was going to fall behind on my reading, but nope! I’m doing fine.

The Tapestry and the Chosen One

I actually planned a different Note altogether, and did a few ideas in the notebook, about basically I saw a screenshot of a tweet that kind of bugged me? Basically the gist of the would-be Note is: No, your mainstream part of the political party, Left or Right, is not the Rebel Alliance, is not Dumbledore’s Army, or whatever resistance group from mainstream fiction you would like to think you are.

But you know, I thought, maybe, a less overtly political Note would be better. Probably. So. Back to The Tapestry.

Anyway I’m getting into Ghost of Tsushima and having fun! I have a nice straw hat. And also a not-so-nice straw hat that has holes in it, so it doesn’t keep the rain out.

Jurassic Park Shouldn't Work

Hallo! Happy Fourth of July weekend, I hope that the fireworks don’t scare your pets too much, and that you can have a good celebration doing… I dunno, something. Dressing up in Revolutionary clothes, maybe. Those guys were snazzy dressers.

…I need to put up pictures from my day trip last weekend.

I’m thinking about this because I recently saw Jurassic World: Dominion, and no worries, a review of that is coming to the movie review blog, but this isn’t exactly about that. It’s more about Jurassic Park in its first installment.
