On Mark Antony and Writing About History You Don’t Understand

I am not feeling so hot as I type this; hopefully by the time you read this I’ll be feeling much better with some adequate bedrest, but at the moment I’m probably sitting in bed under the blankets with a hoodie and a beanie.

But in other news, I decided to start a Discworld read-through, and so I’ve started The Colour of Magic and I’ll probably get through it today.

I think I have talked about this before, but I don’t know that I’ve done so in a Saturday Note. If so, I apologize.

Folklore & Fairy Tale in Historical Settings

I am very much enjoying watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and getting plenty of surprises! I am getting quite caught up in it. On the book side of things I am currently reading Galileo Goes to Jail, which is NOT a novel about historical scientists playing Monopoly but a collection of essays by historians dispelling myths about the relationship between science and religion.

Also! I’m playing Horizon Forbidden West and while I’m not far, it’s still fantastic.

This is on my mind from watching Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and reading the Winternight Trilogy.

On Easter Eggs & Secrets

I read and finished this week The Letter for the King by Tonky and I thought it was pretty good! More memorable than the Netflix adaptation of it (not that it was bad, but not particularly memorable), and a good book for kids about knights and stuff.

Currently I am watching too many shows. I am a bit close to finishing Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, I think? I’m giving up on Oddballs because it’s not actually funny. Still working on Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Leverage, though.

It was considered to do a Note on political discourse in fiction, but I’m pretty sure I’ve done that one. A lot of it would have been me ragging on the CW Supergirl though, if you’re curious.

On Info Dumps

First Saturday Note of 2023!

I have started Horizon Forbidden West and so far it’s great! The game is probably very difficult to get into if you haven’t played the first game, but I remember it fondly so it’s a nice little reunion-type thing.

I waffled a bit on the topic of this one because I had an idea about doing the “homage episodes” for television, but I decided against it because the only negative example I could think of (for what NOT to do) was one episode of Royal Pains that’s a shout-out to The Hangover, and I barely remember it.

So not that.

Things I Have Done in 2022

Hopefully by the time you read this I will be playing Horizon Forbidden West and taking down some robot dinosaurs! If not, welp, I’ll do something else. Maybe finishing The Red Winter and bopping up my book count by one more this year? We will see.

I don’t know what to write exactly, so I went with this list of stuff I have done in the past year. I also considered doing a list of things I plan to do next year, but I feel like that’s just asking for trouble.

Frozen Fantasy Stories

It is Christmas Eve and it is REALLY friggin’ cold outside, but I hoped to sit and write a Saturday Note so that you guys don’t feel as if you’re all alone on this Christmas weekend. Or, more likely, I feel bad if I go a week without doing a Saturday Note.

I didn’t know what to write about, but then I got hit by a blast of cold wind/inspiration and so here we are!

Adapting Video Games to Screen

I did not know if I would have time to write this Saturday Note either, but I thought I’d give it a try, so here we go. I had the idea of talking about what a fantasy setting based off of the Italian Renaissance would look like, because I just read the novelization of Assassin’s Creed II, but I think we’ll save that until after I try reading City of Masks (which I got on hold from the library!).

This has been in the news lately so I thought I’d give my two cents.
